![]() The American Prospect asked experts and scholars in the field of inequality to weigh in on Piketty's argument and potential impact for policymaking on our shores. The book seeks to model the history, recent trends, and back-to-the-19th-century future of capitalism. ![]() Last fall, Piketty published his magnum opus, Capital in the Twenty-First Century, in France. By the past decade, according to Piketty and Saez, inequality had returned to levels nearing those of the early 20th century. Piketty and Saez's research stood ready with data showing that elites in developed countries had, in recent years, grown far wealthier relative to the general population than most economists had suspected. ![]() ![]() In the wake of the 2007 financial crash, fundamental questions about the economy that had long been ignored again garnered attention. In the 1990s, two young French economists then affiliated with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez, began the first rigorous effort to gather facts on income inequality in developed countries going back decades. ![]()

A woman is no man etaf rum6/12/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() Now, a decade after Isra’s and Adam’s deaths, their oldest child, Deya, age 18, receives a mysterious message from an unidentified source, asking her to travel to a Manhattan bookshop. The situation shifts dramatically, however, after Isra and Adam are killed in an accident, leaving their children to be raised by the Ra’ads. Conditions further worsened after Isra gave birth to four daughters in little more than five years-her lack of sons being evidence, Fareeda claims, of Isra’s deficiency. ![]() Almost immediately tensions erupted, and the newly arrived immigrant found herself on the receiving end of near-daily beatings and verbal abuse. Unable to complete school in Palestine, where she grew up, Isra was married off by her parents to American deli owner Adam Ra’ad and sent to Brooklyn, New York, where she was forced to live in the crowded Bay Ridge home of her in-laws, Fareeda and Khaled, and their three other children. ![]() Isra Hadid, the heroine of Rum's debut novel, has been reminded of this every day of her life. In his last sermon, the Prophet Muhammad said, "Observe your duty to Allah in respect to the women, and treat them well," but in many Muslim countries, tradition relegates women to subservient roles. ![]()

Atkins de paula physical chemistry6/11/2023 ![]() ![]() I am predisposed towards biochemistry, and physical chemistry just doesn't work for me. If it did, then it would just be printed with nothing really being said about it, but I'm expected to apply it. I'm not there yet! The homework used equations or forms of the primary equation that were not introduced and not listed in the end-chapter formulas list. I was doing Ch 15 homework, and the equation I was supposed to use for one of them was from Ch 16. I will go through a passage, feel like I understand it, and then I see an example using definitions that it had not previously introduced. As I read it, and especially towards chapters 17,18,19,20,21, things feel really jumbled around. I have gone through this whole book over the last year. Here is why I give this book a low rating: ![]() ![]() I saw some reviews that were bewildered to see the low ratings. ![]()

The age of light whitney scharer6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Although Scharer reimagines the relationship to make the plot more interesting, she is keen on maintaining the genuine nature of the main character’s history. This novel is, therefore, a fictional piece based on the history of Lee Miller and Man Ray. As such, she had never been credited for the discovery of radical photography techniques that influenced the artistry of photography. Her fascination with Lee started when she found out that, despite her talent, she had remained under the shadow of Man Ray’s accomplishment. Scharer wrote The Age of Light two years after researching about Lee Miller. She also holds an MFA from the University of Washington where she studied Creative Writing. Whitney Scharer attended Wesleyan University where she graduated with a BA. ![]()

Locke & key vol 1 welcome to lovecraft6/10/2023 ![]() ![]() I know a lot of graphic novels use subsequent issues to further develop their world, but I wish we got anything in this issue. I think the biggest downfall of this graphic novel is that it felt like it had to set up too much for it’s run time and it explained absolutely nothing. ![]() If that’s not something you’re in to, you might want to pass on this one. I knew going into this that it was going to be gory and yeah, it is. I am curious to see how the story develops and where it goes. Overall, this story was intriguing. ![]() Home to a hate-filled and relentless creature that will not rest until it forces open the most terrible door of them all… Review: Locke & Key tells of Keyhouse, an unlikely New England mansion, with fantastic doors that transform all who dare to walk through them. Kid Beowulf by Alexis E.
